South Africa

South Africa is a middle-income developing country with a population of about 43 million people and an area of 1.2 million square miles. It has with an abundant supply of resources, well-developed financial, legal, communications, energy, and transport sectors, and a modern infrastructure supporting an efficient distribution of goods throughout the region. However, with a high unemployment rate of approximately 30% unemployment and economic problems remaining from the apartheid era, South Africa is struggling to lift disadvantaged groups out of poverty.

In the rural areas fuelwood plays a significant role in household energy. The contribution of biomass (fuelwood and bagasse) to the country's primary energy supply is estimated at 10%, and over 65% of the total net energy consumed in the household sector comes from fuelwood.
