Tanzania

Currently, the population of Tanzania whose area is 945,000 km2 (map below) is about 35 million people, with an estimated annual population growth rate of 2.8%. About 75% of the population live in rural areas. Agriculture is a major economic sector accounting for about 50% of the GDP and over 60% of the export earnings and a majority of the population is involved in various agricultural activities, mainly subsistence farming. Manufacturing and mining sectors account for about 8% and 2% of GDP respectively, while commerce accounts for about 12% and transport sector 6%. The annual GDP per capita is below USD 300. Poverty is one of the main problems in Tanzania. Poverty reduction interventions need to be enhanced in order to facilitate income growth through employment and ensure access to basic services and goods for the poor. Poverty reduction programmes aim at economic and social empowerment of the poor and creating an enabling environment for development, through investment in transportation, communications, energy and other economic, social and physical infrastructure. These interventions are mutually related and activities in all areas of the programme are required for a successful poverty reduction to take place.
