Namibia

Namibia, a large and sparsely populated country on the southwest coast of Africa. It is estimated that there are almost 2 million people. The climate is generally hot and dry, with very low annual rainfall in the Namib and Kalahari deserts (less then 50 mm). Vegetation is generally sparse, but woodland savanna is found in the central plateaum and forests in the northeast, which is also the poorest part of the country. Despite the low population density, excessive farming pressure on a fragile ecology has resulted in environmental damage in the north. Much of the woodlands and perennial grasses have disappeared, leaving the soil degraded and subject to desertification.
