Lesotho

Lesotho, popularly known as 'the Mountain Kingdom' is landlocked by the Republic of South Africa. The country covers about 35,000 square kilometers and it is divided into ten administrative districts. There are four ecological zones namely the lowlands, foothills, highlands and the Senqu river valley. The country has a unique feature of occupying an elevation of between 1 450 meters and 3 483 metres. Lesotho's primary natural resource is water.

The population is approximately 2.2 million (2003). It is an independent country in Southern Africa. Its economy is based on subsistence agriculture, remittances from migrant miners employed in South Africa, and a rapidly growing textile industry, that employs mostly women. Lesotho has a marked inequality in income distribution and serious unemployment problems.

The Lesotho Highlands Water project has played an outstanding role, among others:
  • Promoting tourism
  • Improving the road system
  • Creating employment for locals
