ProBEC Zambia participated in the Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show which was held in Lusaka, on the 29th of July to the 2nd of August, 2010. This event is organized annually by the Agricultural and Commercial Society of Zambia which allows for both local and international companies and organizations in specific industries to showcase and demonstrate their products and services to the general public. This year’s 84th edition of the Show was held under the theme ‘Sustainable Development’.
This event attracts all walks of life as well as an array of institutions and organizations that are interested in networking, selling their products as well as developing partnerships with other organisations. It is the largest trade show in the country and records well over 900 companies in attendance. This year, ProBEC Zambia took this opportunity not only to promote its energy efficient technologies but also to promote the organization and its objectives.
During this event, ProBEC partnered with Zambia Environment and Energy Organisation (ZENGO) and other individual stove producers to exhibit and sell different energy efficient technologies. This gave the stove producers an opportunity to take full advantage of the gathering so as to seek out additional prospects for expanding the production of their technologies.
Amongst the many stoves exhibited were the Pulumusa stove, the fixed mud stove and the institutional rocket stove. There was an overwhelming response from the public and other institutions that expressed keen interest in these energy efficient technologies. Over 150 Pulumusa stoves were sold and a large number of on lookers expressed interest in the fixed mud stoves. Promotion concentrated on the institutional rocket stove as there were a large number of institutions at the event. Institutions such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education and the Prison Service were approached and were impressed with this innovation and indicated that that they are willing to try this technology in their various institutions.
The exhibition was graced by cooking demonstrations where the new stoves’ efficiency where compared to the obsolete stoves such as the traditional brazier. The stand, which was designed to depict a traditional home setting, was surrounded by ProBEC posters that promoted the organization as well as the efficient use of energy. Carrying out the presentations were the ProBEC and ZENGO staff that were dressed for the occasion as they wore T-shirts and caps that promoted the stove technologies.
When the stove producers were asked as to what they felt about the event; Mr Chipeta an institutional rocket stove producer said; "It has been good. People have been coming to find out about the use of the stove technologies and many have expressed interest and they would like to buy them. This event has really been a platform for marketing our products”.
